Volunteer in July at El Cap

trail1On Saturday, July 27th, we will be hosting our first-ever volunteer service event at El Capitan State Beach!

The event will run from 9:00 am -12:00 pm.  We will meet at El Capitan State Beach (map).

Volunteers of all ages are welcome!  We are also very happy to welcome groups: families, Scout troops, youth groups, employee groups, etc.

Volunteers will be working to help maintain the Park’s beautiful nature trails.

 Ventura County Supervisors John Zaragoza and Steve Bennett, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), Friends of Channel Coast State Parks and California State Parks officials held a beautification and maintenance event on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at San Buenaventura State Beach. More than 125 volunteers from all over Ventura County (and beyond) attended the event.
This event, originally scheduled for McGrath State Beach (which is currently closed due to unusually high seasonal flooding), was the second annual volunteer service event conducted jointly by Supervisor Zaragoza, SoCalGas, State Parks, and Friends of Channel Coast State Parks.  The concept was originally created by Michele Pettes of SoCalGas and Supervisor Zaragoza, who then brought it to State Parks.  Impressed by the supervisor’s efforts to save McGrath State Beach from the budgetary chopping block,  Pettes approached Zaragoza with a plan to celebrate

trashThe bag grew heavier as I walked. Added with every 3rd  or 4th step  was another remnant of human society, another castoff fragment, left to bob and bounce about, to fly, to drift, now bobbing along in the bag with  the others.

There was a lot and lot of packaging.  Scraps of plastic, corners of meat trays, and lots and lots and lots of Styrofoam.  There were the ubiquitous cigarette butts, caps to plastic bottles in a myriad of colors.  Eight inches of yellow plastic rope.  A plastic bottle. A bit of wire. A piece of a flip-flop. And then the odd items:

Volunteers of all ages are welcome!

 

Volunteers will help to beautify the park grounds and assist with getting them ready for the busy spring and summer season.  Tasks might include planting, trash removal, painting, removing weeds, and more.
